Case Study: Heart on a Record Sleeve
In our digital age, vinyl is the gift that just keeps giving. Whilst you might think it’s nostalgic Boomers or Gen Xers behind the renaissance of records, in fact, surveys show it’s millennial consumers driving the rising trend in vinyl sales. So what’s the reason behind vinyl’s enduring appeal? Maybe it’s the satisfying ritual of making the time and headspace to physically play and appreciate the music. The whole tactile sensation of handling a record is also a large factor and obviously the record sleeve and cover art is an integral part of this experience.
“If you’d have asked me ten years ago whether record sleeve production would be a thriving part of our print business, I would have been somewhat sceptical” says Pete Harrison, TPH Sales Manager. “But I’m very happy to be proved wrong and get the opportunity to work with exciting new artists like Peri Rae.”
Twenty two year old, indie, folk-pop singer songwriter Peri, has just released her debut EP. “Handing you my heart” is a dreamy collection of warm folk-pop and gentle soundscapes, clocking up over 85 thousand streams in the first week. Peri has rapidly drawn attention from industry tastemakers after securing an invite to perform a live session for BBC Introducing and being named as their ‘One to Watch'. Cutting a vinyl EP is a really exciting step for Peri, as an independent artist she doesn’t have big money backing and wanted something tangible that would mark this moment in her recording career. It was also a way to give her early fans a special way to connect with her music. “I was so proud and excited and it just felt like a really defining moment for me as an artist to see what I have been working so hard on in a material form.” said Peri.
Specialising in lower volume print runs, The Printing House team often gets to work with rising stars, cutting their first vinyl project. “We’re dealing with highly creative people, they have a vision and want to get it in print as easily as possible”, said Pete. “As such we offer a lot of help and advice including user-friendly, downloadable pdf templates on our website. With the help of the templates, we can follow a really efficient production model which helps keep costs down for artists for short print runs. We offer 7 and 12 inch jackets on a 350gsm silk card stock”.
